The official bird of the State of Hawai’i, the nene (also nēnē), is a Hawaiian goose that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands.

Nēnē was listed as an endangered species in 1967 under the Federal Endangered Species Act. Its vocalizations provides a low murmuring “nay” or “nay-nay” call. Photographed by Maui resident, Joey Corcino, this image, titled “Affection,” won the Malama Wao Akua Juried Art Exhibition: Art of Conservation Award in 2012.
