Lavaman Triathlon

Sunday, April 1: 
Lavaman Triathlon.  This race is sold out, but you can still volunteer or just be a spectator!  The Lavaman swim starts off with a beautiful 1500 meter (.9 Miles) Pacific Ocean swim that starts at Anaeho’omalu Bay.  Lavaman Triathlon bike is a 40 Kilometer trek on a portion of the Ironman World Champion Bike Course.  Finally, The Lavaman run is a 10 Kilometer run that is one of triathlon’s most scenic. Starting off with a lava field run, fast street sections and tour through the Hilton Waikoloa Village resort grounds and then finishing with 1 mile single track beach trail to the sandy beach finish line.  For full course map and information for volunteering, visit www.lavamantriathlon.com/waikoloa.

Kamuela Philharmonic PDQ Bach Spectacular

Kamuela Philharmonic PDQ Bach Spectacular.  An uproarious April Fool’s Day concert of music written by the composer who was “born too late to begin many works.” Selections include: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, a sportscast of Beethoven’s Symphony #5, Sonata for Four Hands and more. Friday, March 30: Bike Works Beach & Sport at Queens’ Marketplace hosts the Lavaman 3.1 Sunset Run throughout Waikoloa Beach Resort – with the start and finish at Queens’ Marketplace. 5:00pm race start time. Haili Men’s Invitational Volleyball Tournament

Daily, March 19 – 24: 
Haili Men’s Invitational Volleyball Tournament.  Now more than a half-century old, this popular sporting event features novice to nationally ranked AA players from around the United States. The five-day tourney is held at the Hilo Civic Auditorium and other locations around Hilo. Big Island International Marathon.  In this annual 26.2-mile marathon and 13.1-mile and 3.1-mile fun runs, participants run the coast of old Hawaii along the Pacific Ocean, through tropical rainforests, past rushing waterfalls and along black lava beaches to finish at the historic Hilo Bay front. Kokua Kailua Hulihe’e Palace Concert Series & Village Stroll

Sunday, March 18: 
Kokua Kailua Hulihe’e Palace Concert Series & Village Stroll.  One Sunday each month from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Ali’i Drive along scenic Kailua Bay in Kailua-Kona becomes a festive pedestrian-only walkway. Enjoy music, artists, merchants and restaurants. At 4:00 p.m., there is a free Hawaiian music concert on the lawn at Hulihe’e Palace. Na Mea Hawai`i Hula Kahiko Performance

Na Mea Hawai`i Hula Kahiko Performance.  Featuring Halau Na Pua Ha`aheo O Kona with kumu hula Roy Palacat. This outdoor presentation takes place rain or shine at the hula platform located near VAC Gallery.  10:30 a.m. The audience is encouraged to bring sitting mats and sun/rain gear. On the same day, there are hands-on cultural demonstrations from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm at VAC Gallery porch. Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. All events are free (donations welcome); park entrance fees apply.

Aloha Friday Boat Day Fundraiser

Friday, March 9: 
Aloha Friday Boat Day Fundraiser.  Experience the nostalgia and aloha of Hawaii’s old-time boat days, replete with colorful flower lei, graceful hula auana, and lively Hawaiian music.  The public is invited on board Holland America Line’s m.s. Rotterdam, which docks in the Hilo Harbor, for a benefit luncheon in the ship’s elegant La Fontaine Dining Room.  Served with wine, the benefit luncheon features a delicious four-course meal. Vegetarian options are available.  Live entertainment features Hawaiian music and hula.  Tickets are $65 and benefit the non-profit Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
