Families will enjoy the large ocean inflatables from Storybook Theatre and ocean songs by Leon & Malia. Artist and special guest Patrick Ching will unveil a new downloadable coloring book. Silk & Bamboo – A Concert of Japanese Music

Silk & Bamboo – A Concert of Japanese Music. The East-West Center Arts Program presents: Silk & Bamboo – A Concert of Japanese Music featuring Satomi Fukami (koto & shamisen), Christopher Yohmei Blasdel (shakuhachi), and special guests. Orvis Auditorium, UH Manoa Sunday, February 16, 2020 4:00 p.m. A musical journey from Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868) to koto music by the famous early 20th-century composer Miyagi Michio, to compositions of the late 20th century. Featured are the shamisen (three-stringed lute), the koto (13-string zither), and the shakuhachi (vertical bamboo flute). Koto and shamisen strings are traditionally made from silk, and the shakuhachi is the signature bamboo flute of Japan—hence the concert title: Silk and Bamboo. This event is part of the 2020 celebration for the 100th birthday of Professor Emerita Barbara B. Smith. Panaewa Stampede Rodeo (28th Annual). The 28th annual Panaewa Stampede Rodeo, happening February 15-17, will spotlight three days of Hawaii-style rodeo at the Panaewa Equestrian Center, just outside of Hilo. The event welcomes paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys and cowgirls) and spectators to experience competitive rodeo skills born of the island’s deep ranching history and still practiced today. The event features bull riding, calf roping, bronco bustin’, barrel racing and a trio of unique-to-Hawaii events. The rodeo will also feature a rodeo clown, professional announcer, food and craft booths, leather- and saddle-making exhibits, and a culture and history display tent highlighting the island of Hawaii’s and state’s paniolo history. Whale Tales 2020 (14th Annual)

Whale Tales 2020 (14th Annual). Whale Trust and The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua will present the 14th Annual Whale Tales by Whale Trust, showcasing local and international whale researchers, photographers, and conservationists over President’s Day weekend. Learn and interact with top international scientists, photographers, and conservationists during the four-day event, featuring talks from world-renowned researchers on cetaceans and the ocean environment, stunning underwater photography and video of whales, immersive hands-on educational opportunities presented by marine research and conservation organizations, and benefit whale watches. In partnership with Maui-based whale watch companies, local and international guest presenters will be featured on whale watching cruises during the event. Whale Tales is a unique opportunity for Maui residents and visitors to hear first-hand what marine scientists are studying and discovering about the ocean and its inhabitants. Presentations, special events, and benefit whale watches will be held throughout the weekend. Admission to Whale Tales presentations and the Marine Science Center is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $20 per person to support Whale Tales 2020 Beneficiary projects and research programs. Kauai Quilt Show 2020

Kauai Quilt Show 2020.
The annual Kauai Quilt Show is a community event that is FREE to the public and open daily from 10AM to 6PM and on Fridays until 8 PM, FEBRUARY 14 – 26, 2020. It is held at the Kauai Society of Arts Gallery in the Kukui Grove Shopping Center (behind Longs Drugs & the Play Area) Over 70 Quilts made by local residents will be displayed, many will be for sale. There will also be designated donation quilts that when purchased, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to a non-profit organization of the buyer’s choice. Vote for “Viewer’s Choice”. The quilt that gets the most votes gets to be on next year’s flyer. Come join us, learn about quilts and the quilting process and talk story with some of our local quilters who volunteer to sit the show daily. Let us share our love of the art of quilting with you.

Two-time Grammy Award winning Hawaiian musician Kalani Pea returns to the Kahilu Theatre to perform original Hawaiian Music as well as his Motown and Valentine’s favorites with special guests the Lim Family and Kumu Hula Kaea and Lily Lyons of Halau Kaeaikahelelani on Friday, February 14, 2020, at 7 PM.
Kalani Pea is a singer of power, sensitivity, and charisma, and is one of the most promising talents in a new generation of Hawaiian musicians. As a singer/songwriter, Hawaiian language practitioner, visual artist, and educator Kalani Pea has been praised for Hawaiian language fluency, songwriting skills, and commitment to his Hawaiian roots. His musical style ranges from traditional chant to contemporary Hawaiian classics, from original compositions and pop songs to R&B.
