The Obon tradition was brought to Hawai`i by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making. Annual Makawao Paniolo Parade

Annual Makawao Paniolo Parade. Enjoy this colorful Hawaiian style small town Wild West parade in Makawao, along Makawao and Baldwin Avenues. 8:45 a.m: Stick Horse Race (everyone is welcome to participate). 9 to 11 a.m: Parade. There will be no parking in town. Hanalei Canoe Club’s Tahiti Fete. Celebrate Independence Day as part of the Hanalei Canoe Club’s family event on the beach. Visitors and kama’aina are welcomed to take part in the 1/4 mile, 6 man Outrigger Canoe Regatta. Canoes, paddles and experienced steersman will be provided. Medals will be presented to the top three crews in each division. There are special beach programs for the keiki (children), along with snacks, vendors, local music and Tahitian dancing during the day.
