Obon Dance & Festival. The Obon tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making. Niaulani Nature Walk - Free Forest Tour in Volcano. This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7- mile loop trail. The walk introduces individuals, families, and groups to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus not only on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, but also the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians. Offered every Monday at 9:30 a.m., the weekly walk starts just one mile from the entrance to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Kilauea Cultural Festival. Learn Hawaiian crafts and make a lei or feather kähili, play Hawaiian games like pala‘ie (a loop and ball game), weave a coconut basket, and taste traditional foods. Attendees also have a chance to learn from skilled practitioners who demonstrate their arts of fishing, throwing net, building a canoe, and much more. Big Island Hawaiian Music Festival. The program promotes and perpetuates Hawaii’s culture by honoring Hawaii’s people and music. East Hawaii’s biggest music festival includes music, hula, arts and crafts sales, and food to attract visitors and locals to Hilo, provide a unique and authentic experience, and support Hawaii’s cultural practitioners and the local economy. Kokua Kailua Hulihee Palace Concert Series & Village Stroll. One Sunday each month from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Alii Drive along scenic Kailua Bay in Kailua- Kona becomes a festive pedestrianonly walkway. Enjoy music, artists, merchants and restaurants. At 4:00 p.m., there is a free Hawaiian music concert on the lawn at Hulihee Palace. Bring your own mat or chair and they will be checked for free while you stroll Alii Drive, Kailua Village (Kona). The Lyman Museum
The nationally accredited and Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum showcases the natural and cultural history of Hawai'i to tell the story of its islands and people.
