Kanikapila with Wes Awana and Friends

Kanikapila with Wes Awana and Friends. Kanikapila jam sessions are held on Monday evenings, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. and are open to all musicians.  Bring your own instrument and enjoy ‘garage style’ jamming.  Held in the Great Room of the Admin Building, Volcano Art Center, Niaulani Campus, Volcanoes National Park. 52nd Annual Merrie Monarch Festival

April 5 – 11:
52nd Annual Merrie Monarch Festival. Hawai`i’s most venerable hula celebration and competition with week-long festivities including exhibitions, musical entertainment, arts and crafts fairs and the Miss Aloha Hula Competition, kahiko (ancient) and auana (modern) hula competitions. Sunday, April 5th: community ho`olaulea at Afook Chinen Auditorium, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., (free). Wednesday, hula demonstrations at Edith Kanakaole Stadium, 6 p.m. to pau, no charge, but seats are first come first serve, and limited. Edith Kanakaole Stadium is the site of the competitions: Thursday (Miss Aloha Hula), Friday (Hula Kahiko-ancient hula), Saturday (Hula Awana, modern hula). Slack Key Guitar Concerts

Slack Key Guitar Concerts. Traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar and `ukulele concerts. April 5 – Traditional Hawaiian Slack Key; April 12 – Hawai`i’s Sunset Music; April 19 – Legends of Slack Key; April 26 – Kaua`i’s Slack Key. Tickets: $20 ($15 keiki/seniors). The concerts are nahenahe – soft and sweet.  Slack key guitar and `ukulele in the real old style.  All traditional music with songs and stories of the islands, telling the history of this Hawaiian musical art form. Voted 2014 Best Live Show in Hawai`i by Hawai`i Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards. A portion of the proceeds supports the Hale Halawai `Ohana `O Hanalei.
