Sun Yat Sen Festival

Sun Yat Sen Festival. Wo Hing Museum honors Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, known as The Father of Modern China, who led the early 20th century revolution and became president. Watch a lei ceremony at the Sun Yat-sen statue, martial arts demonstrations, and see displays on the life and teachings of Sun Yat-sen from Maui to China. Enjoy a presentation on the significance of his work and connection to Maui. Festival is 1 to 8 p.m. Wo Hing Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with free admission. Conquering the Sun. Maui’s next feat is to stop the Sun Goddess La from moving so quickly across the sky. His mother, Hina, complains that her kapa for the luau will not dry because the days are so short. With the help of his sister, Keahi, and others they meet along the way, Maui climbs to the top of the mountain and lassoes La with a rope made of their hair. La finally agrees to slow down, allowing the days to be longer in the summer and shorter in the winter. UH Hilo Performing Arts Center. UH Performing Arts Center, 200 W. Kawili St., Hilo.
