Zenshin Daiko – 15th Annual Taiko Festival. Zenshin Daiko presents more than 50 talented performers in this year’s annual Taiko Festival. Zenshin Daiko will premiere two new music works and special guest, Hanayu, a sister trio of kodo music, will grace the stage, transporting you to a simpler time of innocent joy and wonderment and following in a rich tradition of popular entertainers who traveled Japan’s countryside. Hanayu has captivated audiences around the world with their fresh interpretation of folk dances, vibrant percussive sounds, and hauntingly beautiful songs. This endangered bird no longer exists in the wild although captive populations are doing well. McCandless Ranch was the site of the last known wild crows in Hawai`i. Battle of Midway Commemoration. The Museum marks the 72nd anniversary of the turning point of WWII with a special Midway program 2 – 4 p.m. Curator and Author Burl Burlingame will present a talk entitled “Flying Fortresses Over Midway” at 2 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. presentation and behind-the scenes look at the restoration progress of the Museum’s Flying Fortress–the famous “Swamp Ghost” B-17E, by Restoration Manager Jim Martinelli. The Obon tradition was brought to Hawai`i by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making.
