Hula Arts at Kilauea – Na Mea Hawai`i Hula Kahiko Performance

Saturday, March 9: 
Hula Arts at Kilauea Na Mea Hawai`i Hula Kahiko Performance. Featuring Halau Hula Manaolana `O Kohala, visiting halau, Hula Halau Pi`o O Ke Anuenue of Ashland, Oregon and Halau Hula Keao `O Kala of Pahoa under the direction of kumu hula Roy Leabig. Their performance honors late kumu hula Raylene Kawaia`ea. This inspired outdoor presentation takes place rain or shine at the hula platform located near VAC Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The audience is encouraged to bring sitting mat and sun/rain gear. 10:30 a.m. to 11: 30 a.m.  Free (donations welcome); park entrance fees apply.

Jake Shimabukuro.  Renowned the world over for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques on Hawai`i’s signature instrument, the `ukulele, Jake has earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis and has performed for the Queen of England. Jake dazzles his audiences with intricate strumming and plucking, electrifying high-energy grooves and deeply felt melodic ballads. Kona Brewers Festival.  This annual festival promotes craft brewing in Hawai`i and promotes recycling. Expect about 60 craft beers from Hawai`i and the U.S. Mainland, plus gourmet food. Hilo Farmers Market.  Find a colorful selection of locally grown exotic fruit, vegetables, herbs, island jams and jellies, macadamia nuts and delectable baked goods. Big buckets of orchids and anthuriums line the stalls. Wind chimes, etched glass and koa wood treasures fill the craft section. You can even find local t-shirts, tropical fashions and handmade jewelry. And don’t forget to buy a lei for that someone special. Hawai`iana Live

Hawai`iana Live.  A 45-minute cultural tourism program hosted by Leilehua Yuen. It features live on stage presentations that share the history and traditions of the Hawaiian culture through storytelling, film, music, oli and hula. Topics and films change weekly as the program revolves around the Hawaiian lunar calendar, and surprise guests and musicians often appear.
